Heka’s energy efficiency efforts are important for the whole city

This year, Heka is taking two important steps towards more ambitious energy efficiency work. Today, we were among the first to sign a new energy efficiency agreement and one of the first rental housing companies to adopt an energy management system in line with the ISO 50001 standard.

Aiming for a ten per cent reduction in total energy consumption

Heka was one of the first to join the 2026–2035 Action Plan of Rental Housing Communities of the Property and Building Sector Energy Efficiency Agreement. Heka commits to energy efficiency efforts with a savings impact of 10% of the total consumption in the reference year 2024, which was more than 621,000 megawatt hours. The savings target of 62 MWh corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 25,000 two-room apartments.

The savings are equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 25,000 two-room apartments.

ISO 50001 brings a systematic approach to energy efficiency work

Heka is one of the first rental housing companies to introduce an energy management system in line with the ISO 50001 standard. We use it both to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and to reduce energy costs. The adoption of an energy management system gives us a more systematic approach to managing energy efficiency.

Largest energy investments in new buildings and renovation projects

Heka’s largest energy investments concern new buildings and renovation projects. New buildings completed by Heka are more energy efficient than required in construction regulations and belong to the energy class A, which generates savings throughout the life cycle of the building. Energy-efficient solutions are related to windows, doors and structures, for example. Wherever possible, new buildings are always equipped with intake-exhaust ventilation with heat recovery, heat pumps, solar electricity, LED lighting, automation and intelligent building services control.

Heka’s new buildings are more energy-efficient than required in construction regulations and belong to the energy class A.

Renovations carried out by Heka will improve the calculated energy performance reference value of the building by at least 32%. Extensive renovations, which are started in an average of 600–800 Heka’s apartments every year, extend the life of buildings, improve the comfort of living and save energy and money.

The energy costs of buildings are a major expense for Heka. Energy efficiency is therefore not only an environmental act, but also supports the affordability of rent. Heka has around 560 residential properties with more than 55,000 apartments, so Heka’s energy efficiency measures have a significant impact on the whole of Helsinki.
